Superwoman was already here. Her name was Dr. Maria Montessori and in the first fifty percent of the 20th hundred years she pioneered and refined the Montessori method of education. Today, there are over 17,000 Montessori universities worldwide including a large number of preschools in the hundreds and USA of Montessori colleges in the U.S.

My children visit a private Jewish Montessori college in New Jersey called Yeshivat Netivot Montessori. Millions more American children are worthy of access to a Montessori education. You will find about 350 open public Montessori institutions in the United States, a number that is shamefully small. I am not writing to explain, “What is Montessori?” There are many good books, a lot of internet videos and numerous websites to answer that relevant question. Inside a Montessori classroom, questions matter more than answers and a child’s natural curiosity is welcomed, not shunned.

“Preschool children, typically, ask their parents about 100 questions each day. Why, why, why-sometimes parents wish it’d stop just. Tragically, it does stop. By middle school they’ve much ceased requesting fairly. It’s no coincidence that same time is when student motivation and engagement plummet. They didn’t stop asking questions because they lost interest: it’s the other way around. Inside a Montessori school, this dynamic does not happen because teachers “follow the child” and are always encouraging the kids to ask questions.
