Spent my last day in London. Had a great time riding the boat on the River Thames. Took in the last of my sites, including the London Bridge and Harrod’s. Went for an extremely late Italian Dinner and got ready to leave for Paris the next morning hours. Got up at 5 am to produce a 6:45 am Eurostar teach to Paris. The Eurostar is a superb way to visit between London and many of other European metropolitan areas because it’s fast, quiet, and comfortable. You are taken because of it right under the English Channel, which at its widest point are 350 miles, and into Paris in less than 2 1/2 hours.
Through the train windows, I got eventually to see the Parisian and English country edges. After my train ride I acquired in the Taxi out and was whisked off to my hotel. The cab drivers drove so fast through all the restricted, little streets I put to hold on to my wig!
He decreased me at a small hotel on the Rue du Gros Caillou called Hotel Eiffel Rive Gauche. I had obtained a good deal with my teach trip so it was used by me. It’s a 2 star hotel that is clean, well situated, and French extremely. It bordered on a bordello, but since I used to be only staying for just one night and because it was clean, I didn’t care much. I actually want to tell you all about the vibe. Day and night London and Paris are. Both are large cosmopolitan cities but, in my opinion, lie at separate ends of the spectrum. At first glance it’s easy to see the way the US and the UK are related. London has an extremely bustling population like NY.
I would even say a more substantial population than New York. For the streets the truth is every color of individual imaginable. It seemed as though about every person I fulfilled in London was blended just. Londons not scared to either broadcast it. On more commercials than I could count there have been mixed couples. Black and white being the most prominent. For the first time I noticed something I had developed pondered about when viewing American TV always.
Where will be the mixed lovers that show Black Women coupled up with White Men? London showed them both. It had been refreshing but strange at the same time as I began to wonder where the same race lovers were? The individuals in London were nice and helpful generally. Maybe slightly apprehensive because I embodied a bit more sun in my skin than they are accustomed to in their overcast land that promotes perpetual paleness (especially in the minorities) – but still pleasant. Paris is a lovely city.
It has a lot of tree-lined streets and beautiful monuments wherever you look. The architecture is breathtaking. The food is remarkable and the style. True, the fashion is enviable however the people are beyond smug. Unbeknownst if you ask me before my trip is the subversive racism of the French. People and the press tend to romanticize Paris in such a way that you believe Paris is very open and egalitarian.
You think because Josephine Baker was able to get away there to tremble her tits and swing bananas or because Langston Hughes found his thrill in de Maupassant that Paris is a black person’s paradise. Paris is a segregated culture that still openly criticizes its minorities (check the links below) while denying that it has a competition problem. Quite truthfully as a person of color, if you aren’t rich or a well-known celebrity the French would rather you not visit.

Don’t misunderstand me, it wasn’t overt but I did get the sense that if I had been 2-3 shades darker and just a little less stylish, I would have been ignored openly. While walking through the Jardin des Tuileries, I stopped at a concession stand to obtain a waffle. Ahead of my strategy all I noticed were sharp Mercis and Bonjours.
I swear to you that I was most likely the only dark person in the backyards. The Louvre Museum sits by the end of the Tuileries. This museum is massive and can’t be observed in its entirety within 4 days. I needed a flavor of it just. At the ticket counter, the attendant was helpful and nice. It wasn’t until I had left her to go to the first exhibit, Les Portes Du Ciel, which I realized I needed another ticket to get in.
